Rose-infused DIY skincare to whip up this weekend

I tried two new self care skincare DIYs this week, both using dried rose petals and minimal nourishing ingredients.

I refilled my raw ingredients at Biome’s Naked Beauty Bar in Paddington, Brisbane - and you can order online too for plastic-free delivery!

These recipes were adapted slightly from Biome’s - they have a whole treasure trove of free, simple DIY recipes online!

Rose and cocoa moisturising bars

Little arrow-shaped moisturising bars made in silicone ice cube trays! I added some of the rose petals into the bars before they set.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons dried rose petals (to infuse overnight in your olive oil)

  • ½ cup cocoa butter (chop it up if you can)

  • 4 tablespoons candelilla wax (vegan alternative or you can use beeswax)

  • ½ cup olive oil or castor oil (I actually mixed olive oil and jojoba oil)

  • ½ teaspoon pink clay

  • Essential oils are optional - it smells wonderfully chocolately without any!

  • You’ll also need silicone moulds (to make it easy to get the bars out again), a sieve, measuring spoons, heatproof jug, saucepan, and a jar to store them in.

Method

  1. Infuse the rose petals in the olive oil by leaving it overnight in a jar.

  2. Strain the oil the next day into a heatproof jug or jar that can be placed in hot water.

  3. Add the cocoa butter, candelilla wax, and pink clay to your jug, then place the jug in simmering water to slowly melt together.

  4. Once it’s a liquid, remove from the heat and add any essential oils if you like.

  5. Carefully pour into silicone moulds, let cool and then pop in the fridge to set.

  6. Take them out of the moulds and store in a jar out of the heat - I’m storing mine in the fridge for summer!

  7. If you use ice cube trays like I did, you’ll get 8-10 lotion bars. Rub the bar over your skin after showering for a rich moisturiser!

Rose water cooling face spritz - give it a good shake before spraying!

Rose cooling face spritz

This DIY is the easiest you will ever do!

ingredients

  • ¼ cup dried rose petals

  • 90ml filtered water (or enough to almost fill the spray bottle you want to use)

  • 1 tablespoon jojoba oil

  • Essential oils are optional - it smells beautifully rose-y as it is!

  • Plain ethanol alcohol is also optional, to help mix the oil and rose water (I refill mine from Vessel Nundah for hand sanitiser).

  • You’ll also need a small spray bottle, sieve, measuring spoons, and likely a small funnel.

Method

  1. We start by DIYing our own rose water! It is really simple - just put your rose petals into a jar and pour your filtered water over it to leave for a couple of days.

  2. Strain the water and pour into your spray bottle.

  3. Add your jojoba oil to the bottle and shake well.

  4. Here is where you can add a splash of plain ethanol alcohol to help disperse the oil in the water.

  5. To use, simply give a good shake first then spray onto your face (close your eyes!) and anywhere else that you want to spritz up - including around the home.

  6. Keep out of sunlight and ideally use within 6 months.
