How to cleanse your face with oil only

Oil is a wonderful thing for the skin, though it’s definitely had a bad wrap.

Thinking back to those oil-prone teenage days, putting oil on your face was probably the last thing you wanted to do to help your skin.

We tend to want to strip all the oil away from our face, to get that, you know, squeaky clean feeling.

But by removing our natural oils and drying the skin out with traditional cleansers, our skin then produces more oil to compensate - thus perpetuating a cycle that I’m sure the big beauty corps are happy to let happen!

By cleaning and feeding our skin with the right kind of oil, we reduce the need for our skin to produce more oil, and you’re likely to reach a lovely balance. Not to mention saving money by needing less, meaning less packaging and waste, too.

You can use oil as make-up remover as it naturally dissolves make-up, other oils and sunscreen, and it will also moisturise the skin. Game-changer much?!

How do I find the right oil for me?

This may take a little trial and error. You could visit stores like Biome and conscious.kin (or the clean beauty store equivalent in your area) and sample the oils there before committing to a full bottle of one.

Jojoba oil should be a winner - it is very similar to the sebum the skin already produces, and it doesn’t clog pores.

Step 1:

If you’re wearing make-up, remove most of it with a reusable round or cloth. Splash your face with warm water and dry it gently with a towel.

Step 2:

Put around a quarter of a teaspoon of oil into the palm of your hand (a small splash). Use your fingers to massage into your face, jawline and neck. Take your time and enjoy the pamper!

Step 3:

Wet a face washer with warm water and wring out, then use it to gently wipe the excess oil from your face. Your skin will feel so soft and loved once you’re done!

To moisturise - you can use a couple of drops on your fingers to rub in and leave on the skin, a particularly nice ritual to do before bed.
