If you’re keen on a simple DIY, waste-free swap, this post is for you! And if you haven’t tried tooth powder yet, please do!

This recipe uses a few simple ingredients, most found in your pantry or easily bought package-free or in glass jars.

This recipe was adapted from eco store Biome based on my experience/ experimenting - Biome also stock all the ingredients you need for this and many other simple, waste-free beauty and skin care DIYs!

Tooth powder DIY - one of the easiest waste-free swaps you can make! And it’s minty fresh!

diy zero waste minty tooth powder recipe:

ingredients

2 Tbsp bentonite clay

1 tsp bicarb soda

Pinch of Australian salt (use Australian salt, if you’re in Australia! We produce amazing salt here)

1 tsp turmeric powder (you won’t be able to tell, and it won’t make your teeth yellow! I refill mine from The Source bulk foods)

1/2 tsp activated charcoal powder (optional - I use a coconut charcoal which is 100% plant-based and helps with teeth whitening)

10-20 drops peppermint or spearmint essential oil

method

Add all your ingredients into a mortar and pestle and grind into a super-fine powder.

Add your essential oil. Taste a bit on your finger and add more mint oil if you prefer.

Store in a non-metal container (a glass jar works well, like this one) with a well-sealed lid.

Use by dipping your dry toothbrush in, then brush and rise as normal!

If you added the charcoal, it can be a little confronting at first, it’s very dark! So far I haven’t had any issues with it staining the sink, just be careful with clothing and rinse/ soak fabric if you get any on there (this is when the turmeric may show too!). To keep it super simple, you can omit these ingredients and still have an effective tooth powder.

Enjoy your easy peasy super-minty zero-waste DIY tooth powder!
